I really like the sole, but I'm not a fan of the upper. I think they should ditch the laces and make a version of these that just have the straps. I've tried a few other VFF models for trail running and these are good but not the best. Here's a head to head comparison of both the soles and uppers of Spyridons vs. other models.Soles: The Spyridon sole has a very rough tred that makes it ideal for running in mud and loose dirt, provides a lot of traction. Spyridon LS vs Komodosport: The Komodosport have a lightweight sole but offer very little traction in mud. I bought the Spyridon specifically for its treds and it really delivers in that department. Since buying these, my collection is now down to only 3 pairs!! I'm a runner, primarily a trail runner, and was always disappointed I couldn't take my KSOs onto wooded trails because I would painfully feel every rock and root underfoot. The Spyridon LS solves this problem by introducing a thicker tread and a thin rockplate that puts just enough distance between my sole and those obstacles to enable a comfortable run on my favorite trails. The shoe strikes a perfect balance between "barefoot" and sole protection by providing just enough armor underfoot while retaining a great deal of flexibility and feel, or proprioception. I used to think it was ironic and unfortunate that the shoe most responsible for the movement toward "barefoot," or natural, running could not actually be worn running on natural trails.
